How do I become a hairdresser?
There are three options. You can take:-
- An apprenticeship to NVQ level 2 (approx 18-24 months) which may then be followed by an advanced apprenticeship to NVQ level 3 (approx 12-18 mths) or
- A full time, 2 year Technical college Course to NVQ Level 2 or
- A 35 week private intensive hairdressing course
What qualifications will I receive at the end of my training?
Our awarding body is London City & Guilds. You will receive an NVQ in Hairdressing at either Level 2 and Level 3 (advanced). All other components of your apprenticeship are covered including Key Skills awards in numeracy and literacy (if you're not eleigible for exemptions) as well as certificates in perming and colouring awarded by Clynol, our specialist colour supplier.
If I choose an apprenticeship with Graham Webb, what will my training involve?
After a 3-day induction course at the Graham Webb Academy, you will be based at one of our own salons (or a salon belonging to another salon owner if they refer you to us for training) All training involves both theory which is taught at our Greenwich Academy and practical training and assessment which generally takes place in the salon environment.
Why should I choose to train with Graham Webb International?
We have been established for over 40 years are widely recognised for our excellence in education both in this country and abroad. Our Academy in Greenwich, with its team of experienced and motivated trainers, is a perfect place to learn. We encourage all our trainees to participate in our annual stage show held in a 500 seat theatre. This enables them to prepare and show their own models for the catwalk and compete for one of the range of prizes that are awarded each year (see photos)
With fashions constantly changing, continuous education is vital. Soirees and specialist training sessions are provided to all of our staff to keep them at the top of their profession.
We realise that our most valuable asset is our employees, from the youngest junior to the most senior manager. They are equally important to the Graham Webb team.
Will I be paid while training?
Yes. As with any apprenticeship, the wages will not be as much as a qualified hairdresser but unlike attending a Technical College, you will earn as you learn. You will also receive paid holidays in accordance with your apprenticeship contract
Will I wear a uniform?
You will required to look neat and stylish in the salon at all times wearing black and white. No jeans or trainers allowed. Attention should be paid to hair and make up at all times.
What can I expect at the end of my training?
Many of our apprentices go on to become fully qualified hair stylists in our salons. Whilst other professions have been reducing staff, Graham Webb have been actively increasing the number of its employees to cater for the continuing demand for its services.
What equipment will I require?
A comprehensive hairdressing kit is available at a discounted price (payment may be made in instalments).
Will I be in the same salon throughout my apprenticeship?
No. We feel it is very important for your career development that you experience working with different stylists and clients. You could expect to move salons 2-3 times during your training but within a reasonable distance from your home.
How many hours would I be expected to work per week?
You will start your apprenticeship working and training on a minimum 4 day per week basis. However this may increase to 5 days as your training progresses.
Our salons opening hours vary but ALL staff work on a shift rota – some days starting and finishing early and some days starting and finishing late.
